War on Error

All that is e-gold does not glitter

Online payment provider e-gold has acquired a reputation as a conduit for criminals to launder ill-gotten gains.

The company has always defended itself robustly – including to Techworld - but more evidence has emerged this week that won’t do the company’s image any good.

The US Secret Service has just caught a major criminal gang accused of running accounts on the service that were used to pay Eastern European criminals for stolen credit card information. This wasn’t a small affair either, as the accusations make clear. The criminals in question would have depended on such “no questions asked” accounts to run their business.

Can companies be held responsible for how customers use their services? Legally, the answer is a resounding yes. Even though the new case does not directly implicate the company's management in any way, the founding principle of the service has always been anonymity, a feature that sits uneasily with conventional concepts of money management. In the past, the company appeared to carry out no checks on its customers whatsoever, which is why criminals gravitated to it.

The US authorities have taken an angry interest in e-Gold in recent times, and further back in time was the case of the cyber-criminals who attempted to extort funds from malware victims by making payments through e-gold.

E-Gold is not unwilling to defend itself. In the interest of fairness, here is its take on the case put against it by the US authorities.

The four greatest internet challenges:

#4 Finding a hotmail account that has nothing to hide.

#3 Finding someone accepting e-gold who is not running a scam.

#2 Pictures of Pamela Anderson with her clothes ON.

#1 Naked Aunt Bea pics.

Point #3 in your comment is absolutely not true. Web4Africa accepts e-gold, and Web4Africa is not a scam! Same applies to many other out there.

Twice in the past month the USSS has issued press releases claiming credit for nabbing international cybercriminals [Blinky, Lord Kaisersose]. In both cases the individuals were actually identified, located and brought to the attention of US law enforcement in early 2006 by e-gold's own in-house investigators. www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/07/whos_fighting_i.html got the story right.

BTW, your "anonymity" descriptor is simply incorrect. e-gold is the only currency (i.e., brand of money) in the world the base of money of which does NOT circulate in anonymous bearer form. e-gold is a closed system. It is impossible to send money or any other form of value into it. All transfers are settled by book entry, generating a permanent record. It is the unparalleled traceability of e-gold that makes it the worst possible choice for someone seeking to launder the proceeds of crime. All these bad guys have bank accounts, credit cards, and use PayPal. But when it comes time to track them down, their fatal error, their game-over, career-ending mistake is if they have believed the misinfo about e-gold being anonymous and left footprints in the system. There is no other settlement system where the end user directly interacts, in the process leaving all manner of "forensic scruff" behind, that in the event of subsequent criminal inquiry is of vital intel and evidentiary value.
