EMC reacts to IBM's storage announcement which reacts to EMC's reaction

After IBM's storage announcement EMC sent me a few points I might like to ask IBM. Kind of 'em. Here they are:-

EMC's points

"...a few items you might find interesting:

- Isn't their DS-8000 three years old without any significant upgrades/features?
- Where is the 4-gig back-end support in the DS-8000?
- Where's the RAID 6 support in the DS-8000?

"Some food for thought."

True and I asked IBM to add another course to the meal:-

IBM's rebuttal

- Isn't their DS-8000 three years old without any significant upgrades/features?
"Not true. We introduced the DS8000 Turbo in 3Q06, barely a year ago, which included a completely new processor complex. We have also upgraded the function, the performance, the scalability, and much more in those 3 years."

- Where is the 4-gig back-end support in the DS-8000?

"Higher performance back-end support improves performance. Where are EMC's performance numbers? We prioritise development based on customer value, and our balanced performance configuration meets requirements today and, even though standardised performance metrics are far from perfect, we still participate because we believe that there is value. We even participate when we aren't winning, although we win much more often than not."

The point here is that EMC doesn't participate in standardised performance tests. I wonder why not?

- Where's the RAID 6 support in the DS-8000?

"Our current availability/reliability on the DS8000 stacks up well with anyone, RAID 6 or otherwise. We haven't delivered it because we feel that there are higher value capabilities that we want to deliver to our customers first."

An EMC blogger, the Storage Anarchist, has a quite detailed blog on the DS8000 and energetically puts in EMC's boot.

For balance you might enjoy this IBM insider's blog notes pertaining to EMC's InVista.

Thanks to both EMC and IBM for the information.
