Carry on with Vista or switch to Windows 7?

Twice in recent weeks I've been chatting to senior IT managers who are in the middle of Windows Vista roll-outs. In both cases the individual has been torn between two options: do I carry on with Vista or do I stop and plan for Windows 7 instead?

Frankly, the answer is a complete no-brainer. Stop Vista and get planning for Windows 7. In my experience Vista is bloody dreadful on business networks; as a home product it seems fine, but hook it into an Active Directory world and the wheels seem to fall off. From the experience of some colleagues who have been trying W7, it seems far more stable - and boots much more quickly as well.

One thing, though: if you're installing Windows 7 you must never, ever, do it as an upgrade from a previous OS. Back up, blat the disk and do a fresh install. You know it makes sense.
